The old HM:FWL book doesn't just have a map, and doesn't just list regimental deployments for summer 3025, it also has a list* of which provinces and worlds organize their military the way Marik does, or Oriente does, or Andurien does.

Seems like a pretty reliable way to start picking out smaller provinces.
Across the Free Worlds, many minor variations of the three primary
hierarchies exist, due to local government edicts and traditional grants

exact pattern set by their larger cousins. Note that one world is even
listed twice.

In a perfect world, I could dissect all seven or eight hundred episodes to find
the Star Trekkiest distribution of Starfleet missions, antagonists,
motivations and NPC strategies. Such volume and detail is a sure recipe for burnout, though.

Each new Trek series self-selects what its writers thought was Trekkiest about the previous series, right? So maybe I can approximate the results of all that research by sampling episodes at random and taking different elements from each?

Reroll:

enable javascript

Reroll:

enable javascript

There's a few other series I could mix in. Babylon 5, Farscape, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Shakespeare... and heck, if even Doctor Who borrows from Battlestar Galactica...

But at some point we stray from the themes and structures essential to Star Trek. Like, your average episode of Firefly has a fistfight, a gunfight, a word fight, some kind of spaceship thing, and involves a moral or ethical dilemma. Not too different from Star Trek TOS. Except TOS also adds a good dose of scientific method to everything - whether the problem at hand is mechanical, social or philosophical, the crew feels it out systematically.
On a good day - like I think we had for this recording - we cover everything we wanted to say without having to hold too closely to our prepared agenda. We could undoubtedly polish the product more with scripted repartee and rehearsed personalities; but for me, the point (when feasible) is to engage with the ideas as we're recording and choose my words as I go. When I can do that well then everything else follows naturally.

...before decrying Ready Player One, I should probably consider what (if anything) distinguishes it from "The Ultimate Showdown" and "We Come Together."

...and closing with "faithful listeners?" Yeesh. This is why we need a formal sign off.

It's an interesting inversion of the Next Generation episode "Tapestry." Star Trek doesn't often address career issues or office politics, and I'm glad we get some depth to Yaphit's perspective and get to see how the Captain and Executive Officer handle disagreement.

Basics: The Lyrans build 500 'Mechs/yr, of which 230 are uncommon, including 109 Commandos, 33 Zeuses and 5 Firestarters.

Defiance Industries and Coventry Metal Works - being the Commonwealth's first (HS:LC p122) and second (p165) biggest manufacturers, and each listing their primary products (p136) first - set a precedent for HS:LC's manufacturing page listing everything from biggest to smallest.

Key insight this time around is that many of HS:LC's manufacturers are new, that P1e's manufacturing pages look like they were cut from an early draft of HS:LC, and that the Periphery states build 167 'Mechs/yr.

Defiance Industries

Hesperus II: Zeus, Atlas, Archer, Griffin, Hatchetman; Rommel/Patton, Manticore
Furillo: Zeus, Wasp, Locust

If the Lyrans' newest manufacturers build 167/yr, that leaves 333/yr for the older manufacturers. HS:LC (p47) says Hesperus was "responsible for over 30 percent of our BattleMech production" in the First Succession War; 30% of 333 = 100 'Mechs/yr (about 20 per production line).

The Successor States build 2700 'Mechs/yr, of which 10% should be assault 'Mechs, of which the Lyran Commonwealth and the Federated Suns should split half. The Suns build 25 assault 'Mechs/yr, which leaves 110/yr for the Lyrans. TR:3025 associates three assault 'Mechs with the Commonwealth:

the Zeus, built at 33/yr;

the Banshee is not in production, but if it were, the population of
1667 Banshees would mean a "slow" production rate of 57/yr; and

the Atlas. An initial 110 assault 'Mechs/yr, minus 33 Zeuses and 57 Banshees, would make 20 Atlases/yr.

I've also previously estimated Hesperus' Atlas at 20/yr for other reasons.

HS:LC lists production lines from highest to lowest. If we accept the Atlas as 20/yr, then Hesperus' Archer, Griffin and Hatchetman lines can be no larger than 20 and the Zeus line can be no smaller than 20. To get as many Wasps and Locusts as possible, Furillo needs as many Zeuses as possible - 20 Zeuses on Hesperus means 13 Zeuses on Furillo, and therefore 13 Wasps and 13 Locusts, bringing Defiance Industries to a total output of 139 'Mechs.

By weight, this makes Defiance Industries "By far the largest BattleMech company still functioning in the Inner Sphere" (HS:LC p122):

Corean Enterprises, 130 Valkyries = 3900 tons
Gorton, Kingsley & Thorpe, 142 Panthers = 4970 tons
Earthwerks (FWL), 114 or 128 (various) = 5255 or 6165 tons
Defiance Industries, 139 (various) = 8560 tons

Last week I figured the Norse Works of Marduk at 150 Griffins and Wolverines (8250 tons), which comes pretty close to Defiance; but I think Defiance leaps further ahead with (HS:LC, p135-139):

ongoing renovations at the Furillo plant, which has at least one additional 'Mech line waiting idle;

a Vehicle Division producing Manticore tanks and soon to produce Rommel/Patton tanks;

three other major Divisons, and joint ownership of a major subsidiary;

joint ownership of a JumpShip yard; and

rumors of further expansions.

I suspect Defiance is also more heavily involved in the production of spare parts, but that's difficult to quantify.

Coventry Metal Works

Coventry: Commando, Vulcan, Phoenix Hawk, Firestarter, Stinger

If Defiance Industries builds 139 'Mechs, then Coventry (because it's listed second) builds no more than that; with 109 Commandos, 5 Firestarters and at most 5 Stingers, there's just 20 'Mechs left to split between Vulcans and Phoenix Hawks.

Splitting them 10 and 10 brings the total to 3850 tons, just shy of the Federated Suns' Valkyrie plant.

It's interesting that the Lyran Commonwealth's two biggest manufacturers would build about the same total number of 'Mechs as the Federated Suns' two biggest plants (139 + 139 vs 150 + 130).

Bowie Industries

Alarion: Chippewa, Leopard, Union
Carlisle: Marauder, Archer; Packrat

Olivetti Weaponry

Sudeten: Warhammer, Thunderbolt; Hunter, J Edgar

If the Commonwealth's biggest, oldest manufacturers build 333 'Mechs/yr, it looks like they might match the Inner Sphere's average of 49 tons per 'Mech. Defiance's 139 'Mechs are so heavy, and Coventry's 139 'Mechs are so light, that the last 55 'Mechs would mass 71 tons each.

That looks a lot like Bowie and Olivetti's 'Mechs.

Lockheed/CBM Corporation

Donegal: Lucifer, Sabre, Centurion
Tharkad: Lightning, Hellcat
Gibbs: Eagle, Thunderbird

TharHes Industries

Tharkad: Crusader

Shipil Company

Skye: Seydlitz, Overlord

If Bowie Industries builds about 55 'Mechs and fighters per year, that means something like 28 Chippewas; if Lockheed/CBM builds about 55 fighters across its 7 production lines, that means something like 8 Lucifers; and if Shipil builds about 55 Seydlitzes, that brings the Lyrans to around 91 signature fighters.

And we do in fact expect the Lyrans to build 90 signature aerospace fighters.

The five Great Houses build 2700 'Mechs altogether; half are common designs, with each House building 270. So, since the Great Houses build 1264 fighters altogether, we might expect half to be common designs with each House building 126. The Lyrans build 216 fighters in all (1264 * 6/35 = 216), and when we take away 126 for common designs, that leaves 90 for signature designs.

If the company ahead of TharHes builds about 55 fighters and the company behind TharHes builds about 55 fighters then TharHes should build about 55 Crusaders.

I'm surprised that Lucifer production would be so low; but looking at the medium fighters in other states, Kurita's Shilone and Davion's Corsair both also occupy the smallest possible production slots.

It's also surprising that Lockheed/CBM, "The largest manufacturer of AeroSpace Fighters in the Commonwealth" (HS:LC p122) would build the same number as the smaller Shipil, but it's got the same kind of weight advantage that Defiance has over Coventry.

Trellshire Heavy Industries

Twycross: Stalker, BattleMaster, Rifleman
Chahar: Artillery pieces, personal weapons, vibrabombs, munitions

Red Devil Industries

Pandora: Rifleman, BattleMaster; Condor, Centipede, infantry weapons, artillery systems

The Lyran Commonwealth builds 230 'Mechs of uncommon design each year. If all of them are shown on HS:LC's manufacturing page (and if I've counted the Atlases, Hatchetmen and Vulcans right) then Trellshire must build 33 Stalkers.

If the HS:LC page shows 110 assault 'Mechs/yr (and if I have the Atlases and Stalkers right) then Trellshire and Red Devil must build a combined 24 BattleMasters.

The manufacturers listed on HD:FS' manufacturing page all build 50 or more units; if the same is true of Red Devil, and all 6 of its production lines count towards that 50, then the Rifleman line (being biggest) has to be at least 9/yr. The smallest Free Worlds League manufacturer happens to build 9 Quickdraws, while the second smallest builds 18 'Mechs of two types. If Red Devil builds 9 Riflemen and 9 BattleMasters, then that leaves 33 Stalkers, 15 BattleMasters and (at a guess) 5 Riflemen for Twycross - a total tonnage which happens to exactly match Independence Weaponry on Quentin in the Federated Suns.

On a strange but reassuring note, these three "newer" BattleMech manufacturers come to an as-perfect-as-possible average of 73.5 tons per 'Mech, or 1.5x the normal average of 49 tons.

The Inner Sphere builds only 26 to 29 Riflemen in all. With 8 already claimed by the Free Worlds League and 5 by the Federated Suns, giving 14 to the Lyran Commonwealth will make it very unlikely that the Capellans or Draconians build any.

Leftovers

This all leaves 41 'Mechs/yr unaccounted for. I don't yet see any signs as to what they might be. SkilTaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496366094516039415noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-978535510758037217.post-72528524221576204502020-02-20T05:00:00.001-05:002020-02-20T05:00:13.307-05:00The Orville Episode 10 - Circ du FearThis was a fun discussion. "Firestorm" is jam packed with Star Trek references, and it may be the first time the Orville centers an episode on a single character instead of a team-up or ensemble.

Kelly telling Alara that "she made the responsible command decision" is a nice callback (and ironic foreshadowing) that helps distinguish this conflict from her previous one. Alara's self-confidence is hard-won and I'm sure we will never again question it.

The "plasma storm" is an interesting choice. Sure, the Orville has run into other occasional bits of strange space weather, but for the most part the show seems to favor more realistic astronomy.
This calls up memories and shadows of memories from fourteen or fifteen years ago. I'm sure people were trying to work it out fourteen or fifteen years before that, too.

29 Phoenix Hawks would put the Suns 830 tons shy of a 49 ton national average. That's 17 'Mechs' worth - maybe to make up for saddling Liao and Kurita with 17 Chargers.

Interestingly, when HD:FS (p125) talks about which 'Mechs are most common in lances of different weight, it mentions Shadow Hawks instead of Wolverines. Wonder if that's an error (like the Centurions on Panpour) or deliberate.

Changed my mind on one thing since last time: the Federated Suns still builds 270 'Mechs of "common" design each year, but only the designs named on HD:FS' manufacturing pages. No hidden Stingers, Shadow Hawks, etc. The manufacturing pages still show only 500 of the Suns' 700 built each year, and they still order the manufacturers by size.

I already knew the 430 "uncommon" 'Mechs included 122 Enforcers. I've now also determined it includes 7 Javelins, 11 Ostscouts and 14 Ostsols; and since

130 Valkyries + 7 Javelins + 11 Ostscouts = 148
142 Panthers + 6 Jenners = 148

I think it's a fair guess that the Suns build 64 JagerMechs to match the Combine's 64 Dragons. The Draconis Combine is the Federated Suns' primary enemy, and the JagerMech looks like a Suns' counterpoint to the Dragon - the Dragon has 1.5x the armor while the JagerMech has 1.5x the firepower.

HS:LC (p120) and TR:3025 agree that the Suns build Dervishes. "As the last 'Mech designed to serve the Star League in large numbers" I would expect it to have "slow" turnover like the UrbanMech, Firestarter, Jenner and Javelin. The Inner Sphere has 4/3rds as many medium 'Mechs as light 'Mechs overall - if the Dervish is the only medium with "slow" turnover then Achernar should build

(4+5+6+7)*4/3 = 29 per year.

So out of the full 430 "uncommon" designs built each year, I have only 28 left to identify.

Three Princedoms

I count about 507 named stars in the 3025 Federated Suns, which is perfect for 110 'Mech regiments divided between three sub-kingdoms. For production I'm only interested in House Regulars though. Counting carefully,

Sandoval's Draconis March has 62 battalions of regulars. (19 Deneb Light
Cavalry, 9 Ceti Hussars, 6 Robinsons Rangers, 7 New Ivaarsen Chasseurs,
20 March Militia, and 1 Conroe Training Battalion.)

Hasek's Capellan March has 31 battalions of regulars. (9 Syrtis
Fusiliers, 2 Aragon Borderers, 3 Capellan Dragoons, 2 Kittery Borderers,
14 March Militia, and 1 Bell Training Battalion.)

Davion's Crucis March sponsors the remaining 117 battalions of regulars.
(90 battalions from the coreward regions near New Avalon, and 27 battalions for the outer regions.)

(Sandoval has exactly twice as many battalions as Hasek, no doubt because the MW1e encounter charts make Sandoval's border exactly twice as active as Hasek's; and amusingly, Hasek has only one more battalion than the Taurians do.)

Sandoval's Draconis March

If each March's forces are proportionate to the March's production, then Sandoval's 62 battalions (20.67 regiments) mean 207 'Mechs/yr split between Norse Works of Marduk and Independence of Quentin.

Marduk should build at least 150 Griffins and Wolverines each year, because that's how many VTOLs the next-biggest site (Cal-Boeing of Dorwinion) builds.

Quentin lists its 'Mechs from least-produced to most-produced: 5 Atlases, an intermediate number of JagerMechs, 20 Victors and 20 Marauders. Putting the JagerMechs right in the middle at 12/yr would bring Quentin's total to 57.

207 = 150 + 57

A very good fit!

Hasek's Capellan March

500 'Mechs/yr on the manufacturing pages, minus 150 at Marduk, 130 at Corean and 57 at Quentin, leaves 163 'Mechs, at least half of which should go to Achernar of New Avalon (because it's listed ahead of Kallon of Talon).

Hasek's 31 battalions (10.33 regiments) would mean 103 'Mechs/yr. That's too many to all be Kallon of Talon, which means we need a site not named on the manufacturer's page - and 28 Blackjacks (filling our final allotment of unidentified 'Mechs from earlier) would look very natural at GM of Kathil.

That would leave 75 for Kallon of Talon. Only 57 or less should be heavy, so as to not outshine Quentin (the "core" of the Suns heavy production); if Talon has all 52 remaining JagerMechs, then there's only room for 5 Riflemen. Which isn't too surprising - Quentin also lists its 'Mechs from least-produced to most, and Rifleman production is low overall. It must also build 11 Enforcers because

230 minus 130 Valkyries minus 64 JagerMechs minus 20 Victors minus 5 Atlases = 11 Enforcers

which means Talon's last 7 'Mechs have to be Griffins.

Davion's Crucis March

This all leaves 88 Wasps, Phoenix Hawks and Locusts for Achernar of New Avalon. (Which, by happy coincidence, is the same number of 'Mechs I find Luthien Armor Works building on Luthien.)

TR:3025 names Achernar of Dorwinion as the primary manufacturer of Enforcers and Dervishes. It looks like the writer originally planned to give that plant 140/yr (the 111 unassigned Enforcers and 29 Dervishes, in the slot Cal-Boeing of Dorwinion now occupies between Norse Works' 150/yr and Corean's 130/yr) and then changed their mind.

The outer regions of the Crucis March sponsor 27 battalions (9 regiments), so it would be convenient for them to manufacture 90 'Mechs/yr. That would leave 50 Enforcers and Dervishes for Achernar of Dorwinion, which may be few enough to be left off HD:FS' manufacturing pages.

The Islamabad Combat Region is the modern successor to the United Hindu Collective, which (per HD:FS p116) joined the Federated Suns as a semi-autonomous member. With 20 worlds they ought to produce 35 'Mechs/yr. I like 14 Enforcers, 14 Dervishes and 7 Javelins because it would:

give them about the same average weight as the Suns as a whole;

put the Javelin in the outer reaches of the realm, like Coventry's Firestarters and Tematagi's Spiders;

be close enough to New Syrtis to imply Michael Hasek's bureaucratic sabotage (HD:FS p139) is the reason Javelins are such hangar queens (HD:FS p125);

leave the biggest share of Dervishes to Dorwinion; and

increases the share of Enforcers built at Dorwinion to 35.

The 62 remaining Enforcers would be divided between two or three lesser manufacturers.
Mercer's pitch for an informal talk between the two sides was pretty good. I love those little moments in this show.

Somehow missed the Israel/Palestine allegory here, that the way to end the conflict is for people to start intermarrying. I think I saw a New York Times article proposing much the same thing a decade ago.
I don't plan to make a habit of it. Orville post Thursday, BattleTech post next Sunday.]

Apparently, the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division has filed to end the Paramount Consent Decrees (and other similar decrees across other industries).

It's
disconcerting to see the body responsible for combating
anti-competitive practices try to argue that anti-competitive practices
will benefit consumers, or to say out one corner of their mouth that the
Decrees no longer serve a purpose while admitting from the other corner
that these tools could allow the studios to force some theaters out of
business.

I'm reluctant to dispute their reasoning
without knowing more about the body of antitrust law. Ultimately though
they rest their argument on what the grand purpose of antitrust
is, and... isn't innovation associated with ecosystems which favor lots of little guys over a handful of monoliths? Ditto, resilience? If lifting the Decrees does turn out to be a mistake, are there provisions to reinstate them, and protect the most vulnerable theaters until that happens?

I
don't know. The Department may be right to let the pendulum try to
swing somewhere new. I would be more comfortable with it if their press release had been able to cite similar
historical examples from comparable industries, and if all the guilds weren't disagreeing with them. SkilTaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496366094516039415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-978535510758037217.post-72880387281409292142020-02-06T05:00:00.002-05:002023-07-06T14:04:28.524-04:00Personal UpdateI don't mean to be uncommunicative. A malfunction over the winter holidays has limited my productivity. In theory I'm better off now, but in practice it's a side grade which doesn't address the root problems.

I regret if anyone's been put out.

Immediate upshots:

I remain unlikely to record video in my current environs.

Twitch remains unfeasible for me.

I appreciate that YouTube allows double-speed playback but I wish it wouldn't keep bumping the quality up to where the video starts getting choppy. I notice the updated Terms of Service include an item about not using third party services to evade YouTube's controls - I assume that's directed at Facebook and the like, yet I can't help thinking how useful it would have been to have a service which allows playback at triple and quadruple speed.SkilTaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15496366094516039415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-978535510758037217.post-84773007717959808912020-01-30T05:00:00.000-05:002020-01-30T05:00:07.336-05:00The Orville Episode 8 - Folded AwayI'm pretty happy with this conversation.

Forgot to say that Drogen's actor (Brian Thompson) was in Star Trek Generations, three episodes of Enterprise, two of Deep Space Nine, and one of The Next Generation. The Drogen character probably bears some discussion: on one hand, he isn't directly menacing and can perhaps be read sympathetically; on the other hand, none of the other rooms in his apartment seem to have locking doors or boarded up windows.

I like that the kids' role isn't to make problems but to make problems harder.
I love the aesthetic of the videogame. The simple holograms feel more analogous to Tiger Electronics than to a smart phone.

I don't mention it in the podcast, but there's a Voyager episode with aliens who have an afterlife as energy beings, and I'm not yet convinced the Krill don't have something like that going on.
(Well, three if you count trying to record over a really bad connection without a script.) First, I got Charlize Theron mixed up with Tricia Helfer; and second, you can find a moral in the episode, in the contrast between Pria's "don't apologize" platitude and Kelly forcing Ed to apologize.

"Time Travel and Bullshit" was the name of a peer-review science
journal VanVelding and Derek joke about in their TNG podcast. The
Orville's solution to time travel paradoxes is growing on me.
Still starts out staccato.

I wonder if Liam Neeson was originally meant to be the villain of the episode, and writing around that created some of the issues we talk about.
