The Orville Episode 7 - Wesley Get Off the Grass

It's always a little weird to hear Captain Mercer make a monetary quip, but hearing "you look like unemployed back up dancers" followed immediately by "what is money" is an exceptional whiplash. Is the Planetary Union really a post-scarcity society?

How is an economy based on reputation any different from this world governed by social media?

John Lamar (J Lee) gets thrown under the bus and his friends learn to manipulate the court of public opinion. Hosts SkilTao and VanVelding discuss 'government by reddit,' and SkilTao has a theory about Lamar.

  1. Lots of ancient turns of phrase are still in use today, "resting in your laurels," being a good one. In that case "unemployed backup dancers" is just a turn of phrase.

"Unemployed" could also be a negative modifier with forgotten origins applied to a future that 100% still has backup dancers.

    1. Also, shoutout to Blogger for having the "sign out" button where every other platform has a "submit" button. That joke never gets old.

    2. There's good reason to excuse relatable dialogue. It does stand out though, and I assume it's a "crumple zone" in the writing rather than a deliberate world-building choice.

    3. Re:Blogger: At least they're keeping the old UI that's designed for PCs around instead of forcing me to "upgrade" to the new one designed for tablets.

    4. Yeah, I can feel the gold grip of "only available on phones," slowly closing in on my old man neck.
